Rep. deMacedo Helps Saves Town Cost of Special Referendum Election

STATE HOUSE, BOSTON - When Plymouth residents head to the voting booth on January 19th to cast their vote for U.S. Senate, they will also have the opportunity to vote in favor or against a tax referendum, Representative Vinny deMacedo announced today.

Originally, voters were expected to vote on the tax referendum on December 19th, which would have cost the Town of Plymouth thousands of dollars in unnecessary election related costs.

“By combining the tax referendum with the Special Election for U.S. Senate, the Town of Plymouth will save $20,000,” said Representative deMacedo.  “In this time of economic crisis, it is imperative that we provide our cities and towns with the tools necessary to conserve resources.  Coordinating the election with the tax referendum does just that.”

Representative deMacedo is grateful to Senate President Therese Murray for her fast action and efforts to see this bill become law. “I commend the Town of Plymouth for recognizing the fiscal benefit of combining the referendum question and the special election in January,” said Senate President Therese Murray.  “During these economic times, it is imperative that communities make the best decisions possible with the limited resources they have available.  It is this kind of initiative that will allow our cities and towns to weather this financial storm,” the Senate President stated.

The Plymouth Republican is pleased to have such bipartisan support, including the backing of 12th Plymouth District Representative, Thomas Calter.  deMacedo has been working around the clock trying to get this legislation signed.  Governor Patrick signed the bill on December 4th.

Plymouth residents will be voting to elect a new U.S. Senator as well as for or against an increase to the town’s meals tax.
