Fire truck donation bails out African nation

Wednesday, October 4, 2006 - The African nation of Guinea Bissau, a country only slightly larger than the state of Maryland, will trade in its bucket brigade for its first ever fire truck today, thanks to some big-hearted folks from Plymouth and several local fire chiefs.

Representative Vinny deMacedo of Plymouth started the campaign for the West African country of 1.5 million people when a constituent working there told him about a fire that razed an entire marketplace. “It really struck me that they didn’t have a fire truck at all in the entire country,” said deMacedo. “They used a bucket brigade.”

Vital Gift

A vital gift from Plymouth to Africa

PLYMOUTH - The cry for help came from across the world and landed on the doorstep of America’s Hometown. Guinea-Bissau, a poor West African nation of 1.4 million people, needed a fire truck.

Today at the Cedarville fire station, the country’s Fire Chief Malam Djaura will receive the keys to two used but functional fire trucks and one ambulance, thanks to some help from two South Shore towns and a few individuals.

No Dirty Water

No discharge, no kidding

PLYMOUTH - Local and state officials don’t love that dirty water, and they’ve taken steps to keep the area’s bays and coastal waters clean.

Last week, Plymouth, Kingston and Duxbury bays and their adjacent coastal waters were designated as no discharge areas (NDA). The designation means boats are prohibited from discharging any sewage in those waters.

Center Hill Preserve

State Contributes $850,000 to Plymouth’s Center Hill Preserve Project

Plymouth - The Town of Plymouth’s Community Preservation Committee recently learned that the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA) has approved $850,000 in funding to the Town of Plymouth toward the $5.7 million purchase price of the 78-acre former Joslin Diabetes property on Center Hill Road. The funding will be used to purchase a conservation restriction on the 28 acres to comprise the east side of the Center Hill Preserve, with the restriction to be co-held by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and The Wildlands Trust of Southeastern Massachusetts (WLT).

Protecting the aquifer

May 27, 2006 - PLYMOUTH - To protect a drinking water source that serves seven area towns, both the state House of Representatives and the Senate Ways and Means Committee proposed budgets that provide funds for the Plymouth-Carver Aquifer. Both budgets call for $100,000.

After the Senate votes on its budget bill, House and Senate leaders will negotiate the differences in a conference committee. The conference committee will present its final budget to the governor for review.
